Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Kenya:

Location and Size:

The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary and national park located in Taita-Taveta County, Kenya.

It covers an area of 28,000 acres (110 sq km) and is adjacent to Tsavo West National Park and the LUMO Community Wildlife Sanctuary.

Biodiversity and Ecosystems:

The sanctuary is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a UNESCO-designated biodiversity hotspot.

It hosts over 50 mammal species, including elephants, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, and various antelope species.

Over 390 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary, including rare and endemic species like the Taita apalis and Taita thrush.

The sanctuary features diverse habitats, including riverine forests, savanna woodlands, grasslands, and cloud forests.

History and Establishment:

The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1972 by Hilton International to promote conservation and wildlife viewing in the area.

Prior to its establishment, the land was used as a game hunting ground.

Significance and Importance:

The sanctuary serves as an important dispersal area and migration corridor for wildlife between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks.

It is a highly valued tourism and recreational area, as well as an ecologically important site for conservation.

Activities to do in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary:

Game Drives:

Early morning and late afternoon game drives around the Salt Lick Safari Lodge provide opportunities to view and photograph diverse wildlife

The underground tunnel and bunker with ground-level windows at the lodge offer close, yet safe, access to observe animals like elephants, buffaloes, and zebras coming to drink at the waterhole


Nature Walks:

1 Night Taita Hills resort Itinerary: 

*Day 1: Diani or Nairobi- Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary* 

Fisiafrica Safaris driver guide will pick you up at 6am and depart to Taita wildlife sanctuary , on arrival we proceed with gamedrives looking for Lions. Red-colored Elephants, Leopard, Cheetah, Giraffe, Buffalo and many more. We later check in for lunch, around 2pm we depart again for another gamedrive expected to return to the lodge around 6pm. Dinner and overnight. 

*Day 2: Tsavo - Diani or Nairobi* 

Breakfast at 6am later check-out and proceed to the park for game viewing. We’ll be looking for what we may not have seen in our previous game drive. And, there is always something to see. Thereafter exit the park and drive back to Diani or Nairobi arriving in the late evening.
